Starting in 2017, Bob's Team - the Bob Sanborn Memorial Foundation will fund at least ONE need-based HB City Junior Lifeguard (HBJG) scholarship each summer, in addition to the merit-based scholarships we already provide. We pride ourselves, and Bob was committed, to providing opportunities for qualified kids that want to attend the HBJG program. We understand that the cost of attending can be a challenge, that is why we will offer at least ONE full scholarship each summer. Scholarships are available for one session per child, scholarships are not available for the Sand Crabs program. Scholarships recipients must try out and qualify for the HB City Jr Lifeguard program. In addition, scholarship applicants must complete a scholarship application, provide proof of Orange County residency, and income documentation and participate in a brief; informal interview with the Bob's Team board members. The ideal candidate not only has a demonstrated need but is also someone with a great attitude and a strong desire to participate to the best of his or her ability throughout the entire program. He or she and his parent(s) and/or legal guardian must commit to the candidate obtaining a 90% attendance record during the session with the understanding that falling below that threshold would prevent the candidate from being considered for future scholarships through either Bob's Team or the Friends of the Junior Guards. Please see the Scholarship Application provided on this page for additional information.
Once your scholarship application is received someone from Bob's Team will contact you to set up an interview date and time with both you and your child, the Jr Lifeguard candidate. After the interview, if your child should be awarded the scholarship he or she will be assigned a session based on the HBJG scheduling availability. Someone from Bob's Team will contact you regarding registration procedures when your child is approved for a scholarship. We will also contact you if your application is declined. When submitting your application, please make sure it is complete. We will collect the required income and proof of residency documentation at the interview.
The scholarship application review period and candidate interviews begin June 1, 2025 at 8 a.m., and end June 15, 2024, at 12 noon. Scholarship applications will be accepted up until the first day of Junior Guards. Uniform pickup dates will be announced at a later time.
