Bob’s Story
Bob Sanborn was born in Rochester, New York in 1961. He was the 4th of Frank and Mickey Sanborn’s 6 children. In 1969, the Sanborn family moved to Huntington Beach, California. This is where Bob’s life-long love affair with all things water related began. As a result, Bob swam competitively, on a club team, starting at the age of 8. Then, he swam for 4 years at Edison High School. Additionally, he swam 2 years at Orange Coast College where his team was, of course, league champions. During those early years, Bob also joined the Huntington Beach City Junior Lifeguard program during the summer of his 9th year. He participated in Junior Guards for 8 years. When he was 18 Bob was hired as a summer life guard by the City of Huntington Beach – his dream job! He worked a tower for 2 years and then became a Jr Lifeguard Instructor for an additional 3 years. Consequently, Bob was doing what he loved to do, working at the beach, working with kids and leaving an indelible impression upon his young charges.
What We Do
Bob dedicated his life to helping others, as a lifeguard, as a Officer in the US Navy, as a doctor and as a husband, father, brother and friend. He was passionate in his desire to support his community and now, through Bob’s Team, we are continuing to support the causes that Bob felt so strongly about.
Junior Guard Scholarships
We have provided merit based scholarships in 2017, 2018 and 2019 to the Huntington Beach City Junior Lifeguard program. During the summer of 2020, and due to the financial devastation caused by the ongoing pandemic, we chose to provide need-based scholarships only. We were able to sponsor 3 families that otherwise may not have been able to participate in the program. We will continue to provide scholarships annually.
High School Scholarships
We will provide scholarships to graduating student athletes from both Edison and Huntington Beach High Schools to candidates attending a 4 year university.
HCM
Cure
We will provide funds for genetic research to identify and hopefully find a cure for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. HCM is the leading cause of heart-related sudden death in people under the age of 30. It’s the most common identifiable cause of sudden death in athletes.
Supporting other local charities
We will work with and support other local charities that promote worthy causes.
